Cut-A-Thon Toolkit

Everything your school needs to host a Cut-A-Thon and help children experiencing hair loss

A Cut-A-Thon is a one-day, multi-day or week-long event where a local salon collects hair and money donations for Children with Hair Loss. A high school service club plus a friendly salon is all it takes. Here is how COPE does it.

1

Partner with a school club and a local salon

A local high school service club is the best organizer. Then ask a local hair salon to be your host. The salon script below walks you through the conversation.

Ask each salon how clients will book, whether the cut is free or discounted, and whether staff can take photos.

2

Create a flyer

Your flyer should answer five questions:

  • Who is hosting? Include the salon, your club and COPE.
  • What is it for? Link our GoFundMe, which goes directly to Children with Hair Loss.
  • When and where is the event?
  • Why should people donate?
  • How can they donate hair and money?

Get the salon's approval before posting the flyer around town.

3

Publicize at least three months ahead

  • Post on social media
  • Publish on townwide forums and news outlets
  • Hang flyers in schools and around town
  • Spread the word among family and friends
4

On the day

  • Take lots of photos and videos.
  • Pick one day to sit outside the salon and encourage donations.

Salon staff prepare the hair for donation. Share CWHL's hair preparation instructions with them ahead of time. COPE's flyers ask for 8+ inches.

5

After the event

  • Send the hair to Children with Hair Loss, 12776 Dixie Hwy., South Rockwood, MI 48179. Check CWHL's hair donation page for current mailing steps.
  • Include a note about your connection with COPE and the money you raised.
  • Email info@copemission.org with your photos, videos and school.
